Fraud crimes increased by more than 40% in the year to June.

However, CSO crime figures show the number of incidents of burglary, theft and robbery fell sharply.

The Central Statistics Office has published figures on recorded crime for Quarter 2 this year.

It shows the number of fraud incidents recorded on the Garda pulse database increased by more than 40% in the year to June.

According to the CSO the increases mainly happened in the first half of this year, and primarily relates to fraudulent attempts to obtain personal or banking information online or by phone , as well as the fraudulent use of credit and debit card information.

However, the figures show a sharp decline in other crime categories with burglary down 37%, theft down 22% and robbery down 21%.

The number of offences for Covid breaches fell from over 10,400 in quarter one to over 3,700.

While the CSO showed the impact of cancelled 999 calls on recorded crime statistics has still to be determined.
