300 extra staff are being employed to cope with the demand for Irish passports.

The Passport Service is recruiting staff for its offices in Dublin City, Balbriggan and Cork after issuing over 822,000 passports this year.

During peak periods, over 6,500 applications were submitted in a single day.

The figures also show that Conor and Emma are the most popular baby names for 2018.

The popularity of the name Conor has jumped from third place to first since last year.

Traditional Irish names like Caoimhe and Niamh top the list of girls names.

The most popular names in 2018 - based on passport applications for infants - were Emma, Caoimhe, Sarah, Amy, Niamh, Aoife and Chloe for girls, and Conor, James, Daniel, Jack, Sean, Cian and Adam for boys.
