The launch of the Covid Tracker App is being described as a "good news day" for the country.
A quarter of a million people have already downloaded the application, which has so far cost €850,000 to create.
It helps identify close contacts of people who test positive for the virus by sending notifications directly to their phones.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says the app is essential in managing further outbreaks here: "Covid-19 is still with us and the international situation continues to be very volatile, and it is entirely possible that we will see many more outbreaks here in Ireland.
"Today is a good news day for Covid-19."
