Latest figures from the Department of Health show there have been 2,466 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Ireland today.

Today’s cases mean the five-day moving average of new cases has risen to 2,124.

As of this morning, there were 457 patients with the virus being treated in Irish hospitals - an increase of nine compared to yesterday.

The number of patients in ICU has continued to rise and now stands at 90.

In a statement, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “The bank holiday weekend will bring increased levels of socialising across the country. With the current trajectory of the disease in Ireland it is important that every individual knows and acts on the basic measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“Keep social distance, wear a face mask appropriately, wash your hands regularly and manage your contacts.

"If you are meeting indoors with others, ensure the room is well ventilated, avoid crowded situations and if it feels like an unsafe environment, leave."

Today marks the further easing of restrictions, with nightclubs reopening tonight for the first time in 18 months.

Some restrictions will remain in place, however - including the use of COVID certs for access to indoor venues.
