Large lorries are to be banned from using Strand Road in Sandymount in Dublin 24-hours a day.

It follows a study by the city council that found they were ignoring the HGV cordon.

Since the Port Tunnel opened in 2007 HGVs with five axles or more have been banned from using Dublin city's streets between 7am and 7pm.

Lorry drivers can apply for a permit for deliveries but are stopped from using direct routes coming from the south to the Port Tunnel, instead travelling along the M50.

But a survey by the city council on Strand Road in Sandymount has found none had permits according to the Irish Times.

A planned cycle track, creating a one-way traffic system, would have stopped lorries from using the road to get to the port. However the High Court ruled planning permission was needed.

Dublin city council is appealing the decision.

In the meantime the HGV ban is to be extended to 24-hours a day.

While speed ramps will also be installed after analysis found one in seven vehicles travelling along the Strand Road were breaking the speed limit.
