Officials say the cause of Prince's death may not be made public for weeks.
The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office says a post-mortem is taking place on the 57-year-old's body, after he was found dead at his Minnesota home yesterday.
The entertainment website TMZ is reporting the singer-songwriter was treated for a drug overdose days before he died.
The 57 year old was found unresponsive in a lift at his Paisley Park complex in Minneapolis on Thursday.
Anna Meacham at Purple PR, Prince's UK publicist, said "It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence at the age of 57."

The singer was hospitalized six days ago with flu symptoms, after he fell ill on board a flight which was forced to land in Illinois.
Prince performed in Atlanta last Thursday night.
