Fishing For Info From The Giller

Folks,
98FM’s weekly sports show “Now That’s What I Call
Sport”  airs every Sunday morning from 9-10am.
Presented by myself Johnny Lyons, this week’s show
broadcast on Sunday May 20th features the following guests :
1. Pat Gilroy –
What with the Euros and the Olympics, you’d almost
forget we have the All Ireland winners in the Dubs !
The Boys in Blue throw in the start of the Leinster
Championship at the start of June and we sent The Hairy Man to catch up with the
bainisteoir of the Dubs the Giller.
Dublin didn’t have the best of campaigns in the
League but will surely emerge from their winter/spring hibernation firing on all
cylinders.
Pat lets us know how preparations for the season
are coming on.
2.  Sean Kelly -
Probably the greatest ever cyclist never to win the Tour de France.
Waterfordman Kelly was the top Irish cyclist before Stephen Roche stole his
thunder by winning the Tour de France in 1987.
He was the first time to be number one when the world rankings were
introduced in 1984, a position he held for six years.
And Sean will be remembered for being banned from the Olympics for life
after racing in South Africa in 1976 under a false name. (At the time there was
a ban on athletes competing in South Africa as a protest against
apartheid).
Kelly now commentates for Eurosport and runs the Sean Kelly Cycling
Academy.
3. Richard Hayden -
The Irish are already one up going into the Euros!
That’s cos one of our own Richard Hayden from Kilkenny has been over every
blade of grass in Poznan !
He’s one of the head honchos at the Sports Turf Research Institute which is
behind the design, construction and maintenance of the pitch in Poznan where
Ireland play their Euro 2012 matches against Croatia and Italy.
And the STRI are responsible for the matches in Euro co hosts Ukraine, the
Olympics in London and the World Cup in Brazil in 2016 !
It’s not all foreign travel (though he did spend eight months in Ukraine)
as they were also responsible for the new Aviva Stadium.
An interesting man with some fascinating tales !
4. Reggie Corrigan -
On the weekend that’s in it, the Heineken European Cup final between
Leinster and Ulster taking place at Twickenham on Saturday, well we just had
to have a legend performing the analysis on the match!
So we’ve hauled in a real cult figure, the man who has amassed the most
caps for Leinster.
Reggie Corrigan stand up and take a bow!
The Greystones prop togged out a whopping 138 times for the Blues and also
wore the green shirt of Ireland 47 times.
Reggie looks back on what could be a momentous occasion for
Leinster.
5.  Damien Moran -
And we kick off the show with a new author.
Damien’s been living in Warsaw for the last six years and decided to put
his knowledge of Poland to good use with a travel guide for the Irish
hordes.
It’s called “The Irish Fan’s Guide To Euro 2012 ” and charts the hits and
misses for the Boys in Green diehards.
We’ll be talkin’ to Damien about the Polish hair of the dog, zurek, kefir,
the 3% alcohol level, disco polo, pub
golf and why wedding guests are expected to drink a half litre of vodka !
Incredibly, we’ll even fit in some football chat !
And why cholera is not just an infectious disease but something you
shouldn’t say in Polish !
Competition :
Tix for Republic of Ireland against Bosnia at the Aviva Stadium next
Saturday afternoon.
Thanks,
Johnny.
